Homemade Cheese Crackers

I love cheese crackers especially Cheez-It I can eat it just like that or even put it in my soup. Why bake my own cheese crackers when I can just buy a box of it? Well, I simply like the idea that I am able to bake something I like to eat and also it’s much healthier without all the preservatives. These homemade cheese crackers are the most tender, rich, buttery, cheesy crackers you have ever eaten. It involves very little fuss. Just put everything in the food processor, roll out the dough, cut it and then bake it.

Ingredients:

1 stick butter (113 grm) – at room temperature
1 1/2 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese
1 1/2 cups Flour
3/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp of black pepper
1 tsp cayenne pepper (less if you prefer less spicy)
1 tsp of paprika
2 tbsp of cold water (more or less)

1. Preheat your oven to 325 degree F. Line a baking sheet with some parchment paper.
2. Put all the above ingredients except water in a food processor. Pulse until it resembles coarse bread crumbs. Slowly add in one tbsp of cold water or a bit more until the mixture comes together into a ball.
3. Take out the dough and lightly floured work surface, give the dough a few knead and let it rest for half an hour.
4. Roll the dough out thinly about 1/8" thick. Cut out into desired shapes
5. Bake for 15 minutes or until the crackers start to get just golden on the edges
Remove the baking pan from the oven, and transfer the browned crackers to a cooling rack.

Your cheese crackers look awesome!!! How long can they be kept in the airtight cookies container?

thanks for converting the butter measurement. I had a hard time converting it, plus, minus, divide..and ended up at 112.5gm, which is half a block of Fernleaf butter here.

What a great blog!
You have amazing recipes and I love your pictures.

I love your idea of making this because I found the store bought ones too salty for me. Will it be ok to omit the salt because the cheese is salty already? I wonder what kind of tool you used to make those nice edges.

Janet, thank you. The cheese crackers last us only 3 days but I guess this will keep for more than a week.

Coffeesncookies, yea the butter here come in a block of 113 grms.

Dawn, hope you will try these out.

MC, you can just use you hand to mix the dough.

LCOM, thank you.

Erica, thank you and thanks for stopping by. Hope to see more of you.

Wendy, Yes you can always omit the salt. For the round shape I used a cookie cutter and for the square I used a pastry cutter.

Elin, this is really easy to make and hope you make some for Jo when she comes home :)

Chef Tess, yes people now will just buy it rather than making it.

Lesley, bake next week when you have more time. I know you are really busy this week :)

Cindy Khor, hope you like these crackers.

Pigpig, yes it gives the crackers a bit of kick :)

This cracker look really delicious, I gonna to give a try later since my daughter just love everything with cheese. The problem I have to get the herbs cayenne pepper and paprika which these two items never appear in my kitchen before, hahaha..

ICook4Fun said...

Emile, you can just omit those two ingredients and replace it with some dry herbs. I put cayenne pepper for a bit of spice and paprika for color.

God, I can't stop eating cheez-its whenever I buy them. I never thought about making them at home, but I bet they're even better.

If i don't have parchment, can it be baked on a lightly greased cookie sheet?

Hi gugu! wow! :D
i lovee this ! look so delicious..
yummy! =)

Elizabeth, I think this version is much healthier :)

Pixen, I know what you mean :) My list is getting longer and longer by the day too :)

MaryBe, thanks for stopping by.

Jen, I used parchment because I am too lazy to grease and wash the baking pan. Of course you can just use lightly grease cookie sheet :)

Sabrina (my niece), this is the first time you left a comment. Too bad when I went home I didn't have time to bake for you guys. Maybe when other gugu come here I will bake some and take it back for you o.k

Rhoooo cheese crackers, magic!!
Humm, difficult to resist. How long do they keep in a tin box? you'll never know, they always go before they have a chance to go off ;)

Christelle, these crackers didn't last long at our household. Only 4 days :) I think you should be able to keep this in an airtight container for over a week.

Sabrina, I will make you some ok. See if everything goes well I might go home again next year.

I made these crackers tonight and I think I did something wrong... they are very good except that I feel like maybe I put too much pepper in it...or cayenne? Not sure which, anyway, I would totally make these again, just probably lesson both of those spices - I'm not a fan of too much heat though, so maybe it depends on taste buds. Thanks for the recipe!

ICook4Fun said...

Nicole, you can always reduce the amount of pepper and cayenne since you'te not a fan of heat.

I will try this recipe and hope it turns out better than the last one I tried. I usually invent my own, which is lots of fun but the last cheese crackers I did had good flavor but would not roll out AT ALL! Not sure what I did wrong. I bake all the time. your recipe is different. looking forward to trying them. Thanks!
