Tofu in Creamy Sauce

This dish is similar to Fish in Creamy Sauce but instead of fish I replace it with tofu. I think tofu taste so much better than the fish as the tofu absorbed all the nice flavor of the butter, milk and curry leaves. This is a great vegetarian dish and goes really well with rice.

Ingredients:

1 block of firm tofu – cut into 1” square
2 tbsp cornstarch
2 tbsp flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper

For the sauce:

3 cloves garlic
3 sprigs of curry leaves
4 bird eyes chilies or one big red chili - cut small
1 cup of evaporated milk
1 tbsp butter
salt and pepper
1 tsp of sugar

1. Cut and pan dry the tofu on paper towel until dry. Lightly sprinkle some salt and pepper.
2. Combined all the coating ingredients like cornstarch, flour, salt and pepper in a plate. Dredged the tofu with the flour mixture.
3. Heat up some oil and fried the tofu until golden brown. Set it aside. Remove all the oil from the frying pan.
4. Heat up the butter in the same pan, stir fry the garlic, curry leaves and chilies until fragrant and lightly brown.
5. Add in the milk, salt, pepper and sugar and continue to stir until the milk thickens and milk evaporated. Add in the tofu and continue to stir fry until the tofu is well coated with the sauce.
6. Dish out and serve with rice.

Note: The spiciness and the amount of gravy can be adjust accordingly to suit your taste.

I think I wouldn't mind going back for seconds and even thirds ... Either way, I love both tofu and fish ... Better than eating red meat and white meat ... Haha!

One of my staples in my fridge is tofu. Love it and this dish looks absolutely yummy! I agree that although tofu by itself has no flavour, it somehow manages to soak up any sauce that's good in.

Looks beautiful and healthy and delicious...mmm. I wish I can find these puffs here. The tofu puffs here are not the same as those back home. I find them a little too tough and dry.

This is really healthy and delicious. I like the chilli padi..yummy spicy! I did a quite similar dish before but instead of milk, I used salt and five spice powder. Will try out yours too..;)

Tofu are like sponges, they just absorb the flavours! Love this type of sauce. Whoever that's invented it is a genius!

Pei-lin, yea I too prefer eating tofu and fish.

Jo, yes I will always have at least 2 packet tofu in my fridge as I like eating it.

Sonia, try out this way the next time. I am sure you are going to like it.

I like cooking tofu with salted egg too. In fact I do have a recipe here. I just made some salted eggs and now just waiting for it to mature :)

Shirley, crab with salted eggs is a good pairing too :)

Mary, I just used the regular firm tofu and not the puffs. I am sure you can get it there. It does look like puffs after pan fried it.

Busygran, I do like to have meatless meal a few times a week.

Reese, you have to share your recipe with me since I like 5 spice powder.
