Baked Ginger Sesame Boxing Chicken

I load up some chicken wings when they were on sale two weeks ago. Instead of the usual grilling I tried making Boxing Chicken. Boxing Chicken is a common finger food served at cocktail parties or get together in Malaysia. It is basically chicken wings with the meat pushed off the bone up to the end to form a ‘boxing glove’ look…thus the name. This is my version of the chicken dish. Instead of deep frying it, I baked them in the oven. It might not have the crispy effect but the taste and flavor are just as good as the fried ones.

Ingredients:
From My Kitchen Snippets

12-14 chicken drummettes

Marinate:

2 tbsp grated ginger
2 cloves garlic – finely chopped
1 tsp sesame oil
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp oyster sauce
1/2 tsp crushed pepper flakes
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 tbsp brown sugar
salt to taste
Some toasted sesame seeds

1. To prepare the chicken - first remove the excess fat, with a sharp knife cut around the thin end of the drummettes until the skin and sinewy bits are separated from the bone. Pull the meat down with the help of a knife and you will get a little chicken lollipop. Repeat with the rest of the drummettes.
2. Marinate the chicken for at least 4 hours or overnight. Pre-heat the oven to 400 degree F. Line the baking pan with aluminum foil. Drizzle some olive oil on it.
3. Place the drummettes on the baking pan, bake for 30-40 minutes (depend on the size of your drummettes) until browned and cooked through.
4. Sprinkle some toasted sesame seeds and serve warm or at room temperature.

I've seen these called lollipop chicken too because they look like lollipops.

I've always wanted to make them, but they are usually deep fried. Thanks for baking them! I'm looking forward to trying these!

The chicken and the dipping sauce look so good. You don't remove the skin, right? And how do you make the sauce? Thanks.

Strangely, I was just thinking abt Boxing Chicken yesterday as I was craving for some kind of chicken dish (fried, or roasted) and today, I saw it here :D ....the only way to curb my craving is to make it!

Janine, ha ha..thank you.

Sonia, yes it is :)

Shereen, using drummets is easier to handle. Ok I teach you when I see you.

Min, this dish is very popular in the 80's and early 90's. You are such a great cook so I don't think it will be any problem for you to handle the drummettes.

Reese, yea not a good idea to vist food bloggers when you are on a diet :)

Shirley, yes and adults too :)

Biren, yes this will be gone real fast and you are most welcome.

Bee Bee, I think it is more about the cute lolipop look :)

Elin, you never see this dish before? Maybe this dish is only popular in KL :)

Yummylittlecook, yea :)

Yen, that is why it is so popular long time ago.

Jenn, yea some people called it lollipop chicken.

Lyndsey, yes this is much easier to eat but take some time to get it to this shapes :)

Ann, :) :)

Lena, you can check out how it is done on youtube.

Wendy, the sauce is just store bought Thai Sweet Chili Sauce. I removed most of the fats and skins.

Tigerfish, can't wait to see your posting :)

Food For Tots, I have yet to have this dish in a restaurant. Mostly at parties with catering food :)

Jeannie, yes they are.
