Lempiang Ikan/Fried Fish Cake


I am missing out quite a bit on the MFF for the past 2 months because of my travelling and being sick so for this month I will tried my best to participate and submit more than one dish. Let’s start off with this fish cake. This fish cake is one of the many dishes from the Northern part of Malaysia. I am not familiar at all with the food for the state Perlis and Kedah but since they so near to Thai I presume there are some Thai influence in their cooking. Like this particular dish it has Kaffir Lime leave in it and as your know Thai love using Kaffir lime in their cooking.

I actually feature a dish called Thai Fish Cake which is very similar to this in 2008 and you can check it out the recipe here . Taste wise I find them pretty similar.



Ingredients:
Adapted from Mesra.Net

300 gram fish paste
30 gram long beans –cut small
3 pieces of Kaffir Lime leaves – finely chopped
1 spring onion – cut small
1 small egg
1 red chili – cut small
1 tbsp chili paste

Seasonings:

1 tbsp oyster sauce
Salt of taste
½ tsp white pepper
½ tsp sugar


For Coating:

3 tbsp cornstarch

Ingredients for the dipping sauce:

2 fresh red chili – ground into paste
4 tbsp white vinegar
3 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp ground peanuts (I omit this)
2 tsp cornstarch
1 cup water
Salt to taste


1. Combined the fish paste, chili paste, chili, kaffir lime leaves, egg and all the seasonings. Mix really well and lastly add in the long beans. Mix until combined and set it aside for 15 minutes.
2. Wet you hand, take about 1 heap tbsp of the mixture and form it into round flat dish. Do the same to the rest of the mixture.
3. Heat up some oil for shallow frying. Coat the fish cake with some cornstarch and drop the fish cake into the oil. Fried on both sides until golden brown. Remove and drain the oil on paper towel.
4. Prepare the dipping sauce. Combined all the sauce ingredients in a saucepan. Bring it up to a boil and serve it with the fish cake.

Yeah, like the apam perlis I did, that's so Thai-like, right?
They used to be under Siamese rule, so, there are similarities.
