This recipe has been in my files for a long time. I bookmarked it since 2009 and only now I am making it. I am not sure what happen but the dough didn’t rise as much as I wanted it to. I blame it on the cold weather ha ha.. This recipe is adapted from Kitchen Corner.
Ingredients for dough:
200 gram bread flour
20 gram flour
25 gram sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp yeast (I used 1/2 tsp)
15 gram milk powder
25 gram egg
115 ml water
15 gram butter
Filling:
200g red bean paste (divide into 8 portions)
Some cherries or sesame seeds for decoration
1. Mix ingredients for dough in a mixer until smooth and elastic. Place the dough into a clean bowl and cover with cling wrap to proof for 60 minutes or double in size.
2. Divide the dough into 8 portions and round them into small balls. Then fill the dough with red bean and shape it into smooth balls. Let the dough proof for 15 minutes.
3. Slightly flatten the dough and use a scissor to cut the edges into 8 flower pedals. Cover and proof again for 10 minutes.
4. Eggs wash the bread and garnish the top with cherry. Bake at 350 degree F preheated oven for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

true, that's why i try to avoid making breads on rainy days, sometimes it could take up to 3 hrs to proof. But i think the shape is very pretty!
On cold days I usually warm up my oven while I prepare the dough...looks pretty though..looks like a flower:)
Very pretty I'm bookmarking this now.
Oh, my childhood favorite cookie. We usually buy it at the Chinese bakery, never made my own. I bookmark the recipe.
This looks so pretty! I almost thought it's either a cookie or pastry ;).
Looks gorgeous. I saw this receipt a while back and have been meaning to bake these one day.
Hehehe..yes,Gert...blame it on everything else but ourselves.I do it all the time, the weather la,the utensils la,the oven la but never never diri sendiri,,wink!wink!..but okay what the bread..looks good.Another thingkan,I also very gatal...when summer's here,I so malas to bake bread but during winter, aiyoh, everyday pun want to bake bread..kan cari pasal?Oh by the way, last week I also bake red bean bun but with green tea.Twins kan kita?

Shirley, you too think it look like biscuit :) :)
Elin, yea I am going to make this again.
Farida, thanks
Lena, yea it too so long to rise. I am going to bake this again.
Jeannie, thanks.
Umm, hope you like this.

Cooking Gallery, yea it does look more like pastry than buns :)
Jo, I am going to try making this again. Hope it will turn out better.
Shereen, ha ha I always blame it on the weather and ingredients. So typical of us. The next time I won't so greedy. I put so much red bean paste in it and very little dough and once I roll it out it didn't have much dough to rise. My mistake. Looking forward to see the buns you made :)
Priya, thanks.
this is the first time i've seen red bean buns made in this manner - it's really cute and attractive :) gives me an idea on how to style my red bean buns next time heh
Even it did not turn out the way you wanted it it look alot like the Japanese Manju pastry. Very popular in Hawaii also. It texture like mooncake filled with red bean.

Gert, I think the yeast isn't in the mood. lol! ha.... It happened sometimes especially when mixing everything in one shot! So, I prefer to rest the yeast to water & sugar first.
