Osmanthus Cookies

CNY is just around the corner and I see a lot of cookies popping up from fellow blogger’s blogs. It is making me very nervous as I’ve just started to bake mine. This is the very first cookie that I made for CNY using dried Osmanthus flowers. I only used the Osmanthus once to cook this chicken dish and I still have a big jar of it. I think the Osmanthus gives a really nice fragrant to the cookies and it is just the perfect fit for CNY celebration. If you’re looking for something different to bake for the CNY I hope you will try this out. I am submitting this cookie to Aspiring-Bakers # 3 My Favourite CNY Cookies hosted by j3ss kitch3n .

Ingredients:

180 gram unsalted butter – room temperature
140 gram icing sugar
1 egg yolk
260 gram flour
40 gram cornstarch
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
2 tbsp dried Osmanthus flowers
1 egg – for egg wash

1. Sieve flour, cornstarch, baking powder and salt together. Set it aside. Get ready a sheet pan and line it with parchment paper.
2. Beat sugar and icing sugar until light and fluffy. Add in the egg yolk and continue to beat until combined. Add in the osmanthus flowers. Mix well.
3. Lower down the speed of the mixer and slowly add in the flour mixture until the dough comes together.
4. Transfer the dough to a work surface that is lightly floured, roll out the dough to about ¼”, cut into desired shapes and transfer it to the baking sheet.
5. Brush the top of the cookies with egg wash and bake in a pre-heated 325 degree oven until the edges are lightly brown. Transfer to cooling rack and store in an airtight container when it is cool.

Note: If the dough is too soft, wrap it up and let it rest in the fridge for an hour before rolling it out.

I think I've seen osmanthus cookie elsewhere this year.
I forgot, but yours look better, kekeke.
Too bad the flowers turn brownish after baking, right?

It must has a very pleasant smell! Does it change the taste after baking or even turned brown? Thanks for sharing it. Hope you're enjoying the day.

Reesse, Jess, Lisa and Ann,thank you.

Wendy, actually the batch of osmanthus I have do have little brown specks on it so it is not from the baking.

Jeannie, yea you still have 10 days to bake :)

Sweetylicious, yes these cookies do have a very nice fragrant of osmanthus. If you like more osmanthus fragrant just add more of it. Instead of 2 tbsp add 3 tbsp :)

Ah Tze, thank you.

Jennifurla, you can get this dry flowers from Chinese Medicine Hall in Chinatown.

LCOM, thanks.

Shereen, this flower in Chinese is called 'Guihua' The plant gives tiny little white or yellow flower and a very nice fragrant especially in the evening. You can get this at Chinese Medical Hall in Chinatown. Too bad I can't send any to you as I am sure it won't go through the custom :)

Yen, are you baking this for CNY. You are too far away if not I will mail you some. Years ago I sent a friend in Canada some cookies and it got stuck in the customs for over a month :)

Yummy Koh, thank you.

Norma, thank you for your support and your comment. So you nak tengok gambar Christmas I ya. I ada post the pictures kat FB and if you ada FB I can add you and you can see from there.

Lesley, I got the osmanthus from Manhattan Chinatown. They do sell it at the Medical Hall. Do try it out. The flower goes really well with stir-fry, steam dish and also bake goods.

Jet, thanks.

Kristy, the cookies have a nice frangrat to it.

Hanushi, make some cookies out of it or you can even cook some savory dishes.

Tried this recipe and it turned out great. Only thing is you forgot to mention how long you bake it in the over at 325 degrees. Thanks for the recipe.

May I know what flour you use?

ICook4Fun said...

Tan Cindy, just regular AP flour.

Thanks. I tried baking over the weekend, it smells great during the baking process. Strangely the cookie doesn't have a taste of guihua. Well, the end result is superb too! It has a mixture of sweet and savory taste. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Gert

Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe. I just baked it. It taste yummy! I love the smell of the cookie filling up my whole house! I added 2.5 tsp of osamanthus flower but couldn't taste it when I chew on it. After I swallowed the whole cookie then the osamanthus scent lingers in my mouth. I'll try using blue pea flower some day. I'm sure it will taste as good. :)

mm.. has anyone noticed Step 2 is incorrect? Shouldn't it be "butter and icing sugar" instead of "sugar and icing sugar"?
