Chicken Satay with Crunchy Peanut Sauce

There is satay but then there’s Kajang Satay. My hometown Kajang is a small town located in State of Selangor in Malaysia is well known for its Satay and people come from near and far just to have it. They are famous because of their succulent beef, mutton and chicken satay with their secret marinate and their homemade peanut sauce compliments the satay so well.

We had BBQ a few weeks ago and Diana and I were craving for Kajang Satay so we decided make some. Our satay taste is no where near as good as Kajang Satay but it does stop our craving for the time being until we go back to Malaysia.

Ingredients :
1 pound of chicken meat (can be dark or breast meat)
1 tsp of cumin powder
1 tsp of coriander powder
1 tsp of turmeric powder
1 stalk of lemon grass (finely chopped)
2 shallots (finely chopped)
1 clove of garlic (finely chopped)
1 tbsp of brown sugar
salt and pepper to taste
3 tbsp of coconut milk (for brushing)
some wooden skewer (soak in water)

1. Cube the chicken meat, drain and set aside. Marinate it with all the above ingredients and set aside for at least an hour.
2. Thread about 4 pieces of meat on the skewer like a kebab. Brush the meat with some coconut milk before grilling.
3. Grill it over burning fire, turning over often until the chicken is cooked.
4. Serve with peanut sauce, cucumber, onions and ketupat ( press rice)

Ingredients for peanut sauce
1 cup crunchy peanut butter
1/2 cup of coconut milk
1 1/2 cups of water
1 tbsp of sambal oelek
1 tbsp of curry powder
1 clove of garlic – finely chopped
1 shallots – minced
2 tbsp of brown sugar
salt and pepper to taste

1. Heat up a tablespoon of oil in a heavy saucepan. Add in garlic and shallots and stir fry until fragrant. Add in sambal oelek and curry powder. Stir fry for a few second and add in the coconut milk.
2. Stir until everything blended well and add in the water, peanut butter, sugar and seasoning.
3. Continue to cook until sauce thicken and serve the sauce with satay.

Gert...looks good enough for me. Instead of kajang sate, now I want to eat gert's sate! :)

PS: Because of you, I had to go out and buy fresh strawberries. I had nearly half a punnet for my lunch today (with a sprinkling of caster sugar).

Jun, apa boleh buat. Nak makan punya pasal kenalah buat sendiri. Kalau kat M'sia pergi beli aja :)

Lesley, actually its not that difficult to grill on charcoal. Just make sure you push the coal to a corner and don't grill it on direct fire :)

Ummi, ketupat tu dari packet saja. Mana lah nak cari daun kelapa and also mana I tahu menganyam :) Kalau you pegri makan satay Kajang jangan lupa kat i tau. I rindu satay kajang :(

Js, you are most welcome. I notice kids like satay and I am sure yours will too. Happy Grilling :)

Ummi, apa boleh buat. Kat sini kalau nak makan biasa kena masak sendiri. Kat M'sia senang boleh beli saja. Memang satay yang jual kat luar tu biasanya kecik and also dia orang tu suka taruk kulit ayam kat dalam and I memang tak suka. Yang buat sendiri I tahu taruk lah daging besar besar. Makan dua dah cukup :) :)

Rita, during winter I too will do the satay in the oven :)

VG, sounds good 'Gert's Satay' ha ha..we just love our strawberries.

Mat, you tak payah susah susah buat. Beli saja kat kedai :) :)

Parker, I like putting lemongrass is my cooking. It will give a sweet lemony smell to the dish :)

Yatie, nanti kita kat Malaysia kita sama pergi makan satay kajang yea!!

Penny, the white stuff is called Nasi Impit or ketupat and you can buy the rice packet online from TOA or some Asian Stores.

LCOM, ha ha you are so funny. Yeah fat and juicy :)

Farina, I pun suka nasi impit. I think I eat more of that with kuah kacang rather than the satay :)

Becky, me too. I can eat the whole bowl of peanut sauce with a stick of satay :) :)

I love Kajang Satay too! I have only been to Kajang maybe twice for satay but there is none that quite compares to the ones there. I miss it too and haven't made satay in a while. I will have to think of doing it sometime soon. Thank you for the taste memory.

Gert,
Your satay looks better Kajang Satay... Kajang Satay so mahal nowadays.. I heard from my sister, it's 80 sen secucuk... I want to try make satay one day... Thanks for the kuah satay recipe.. Couldn't really find one that I like but I'm going to give your resipe a try.

Annie, thanks for stopping by :) yeah, don't we all miss our Malaysia food but is hard to get something that taste as good as back home so the best thing to do is try to cook it ourselves :)

BBO, thank you.

ICook4Fun said...

Tigerfish, it nice for summer but this few weeks its too hot to be standing in front of the grill :)

Kevin, hope you'll try this out :)

Mammfami, memang tension kalau I tengok pix satay jugak. Apa boleh buat jauh dari M'sis kenalah buat sendiri :)

dhanggit, I like my sauce crunchy rather than smoonth :)

Oh my goodness you're making my mouth water with those photos!!! I was born in Malaysia (in PJ) but I've lived in Ireland since I was a baby, I haven't been back since I was 12, so you're making me very nostalgic!! I want to go just for the food!!! :)
