Crispy Banana and Sweet Potato Fritters with Spicy Soy Dipping Sauce


My parents used to live in Johor because of my dad’s work and we kids live with our grandmother for many years. We get to visit Johor and Singapore once a while especially during our school holidays. I was pretty young during that time and can’t remember much about the food there but I do remember their banana fritters. This posting is not about the recipe of fritters but it is about the unique way the Johorean eat them. They will serve their fritters with sweet soy dipping sauce. I think Johor might be the only state that has it that way. Please correct me if I am wrong. By dipping the crunchy fritters into the spicy and sweet dipping sauce it creates a very unique flavors and bite to it. You can use any type of batter recipe you like but I adapted mine from Madihaa’s .

Batter Ingredients:

200 ml water
110 gm flour
25 gm rice flour
50 gm butter – room temperature
1/2 tsp turmeric powder or a few drops of yellow colouring
¾ tsp Salt
4 bananas - cut into half lengthwise
1 sweet potato - thinly sliced


1. Put all the ingredients for the batter into a blender and just blend everything until well combined. Pour into a bowl.
2. Heat up enough oil for deep frying. Use medium heat.
3. Dip the sliced bananas and sweet potatoes into the batter and then put it into the hot oil. Fry until golden. Remove from oil and drain on a paper towel.

Ingredients for Sweet Soy Dipping Sauce/Sambal Kicap

2 Bird's eye chillies / cili padi
1 clove Garlic
1 tsp sugar
Enough dark sweet soy sauce

1. Using a mortar and pestle (you can use a food processor), pound chilies, garlic and sugar until fine.
2. Put the pounded chili mixture into a small bowl and add enough sweet soy sauce. Mix well and serve with the fritters.

Yes, I remember eating fried banana dipped in dark spicy soya sauce when I was living in Batu Pahat, a town in Johor. At first it seems the combination seems strange but I grew to like it a lot

I think.. it's true.. banana fritter serve with sambal kicap is only can find at Johor.. kalau terjumpa terjual di lain2 negeri.. may be the seller is came from Johor.. hehe..

Pisang goreng with sauce....I looking for this recipe long time already...at my working place got 1 malay aunty sell this keep of pisang goreng...I want to try...it a very yummy snack.....

I love goreng Pisang with the dip too. If no dips, feel like not complete like that... no satisfaction in eating them:)

Its remind me of my way eating banana fritters. Cause, i'm Johorian. hehe..
I can eat a lot of banana fritters if my mom make me the 'sambal kicap'. hehe... Yes, Johorian love to eat any fritters with 'sambal kicap'.

Gertrude, back home in Terengganu I know of people who eat their pisang goreng with chilli sauce. The same chilli sauce that is eaten with keropok lekor.

Not only pisang goreng.. they eat tempe goreng, keledek goreng and ubi with this special soy sauce too.. (^_^)
