Ground Beef Chili

The weather here in PA is telling me it’s time for some Chili. For anyone who is not familiar with the cuisine of the Southwestern United States, this stew-like dish called Chili may be a bit puzzling. Yes, it does usually contain green hot peppers as well as chili powder. The Chili has meat in it and it could be ground beef, pork, chicken, or turkey, but Chili can be a vegetarian dish too. You can replace the ground meat with tofu cubes. There are Chili recipes with or without beans, but if you use beans any type of bean will work, including red beans, black beans, white beans, pinto beans, and more. This is an easy, healthy, hearty and inexpensive meal and everyone will love.

Ingredients:

1 pound lean ground beef
1 large onion - chopped
4 cloves garlic – chopped
1 green bell pepper – diced small
1 can 14.5 ounces diced tomatoes
1 can red beans – rinsed and drained
3 tablespoons chili powder
1 beef stock cube
2 tbsp tomato paste
2 tbsp ground cumin
1 tbsp ground paprika
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp cayenne powder
2 tbsp Worstershire sauce
1 -2 cups water
1 tsp sugar
Salt to taste

1. Heat up about 2 tbsp olive oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add in chopped garlic, onions and bell pepper. Cook and stir for 5 minutes. Add in beef, cook and stir until beef is done. If there access
2. Transfer the beef mixture to a heavy stock pot and add in all the remaining ingredients. Add in enough water to cover the meat. Stir thoroughly, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Check seasoning.
3. Serve warm with some corn bread, crackers or bread.

Hi Gert,

For the cranberry orange glazed scones, 1/4 confectioners' sugar for glazing, is it in tbsp, tsp or cup? :)

It's so cold today!!
Hahaha! And if I get a pot of that, it'll be so so good.

Hanushi, it should be 1/4 cup. I already made the changes in the posting.

Wendy, Malaysia cold? I don't think I ever experience being cold there ha ha.. must be the rain and the strong wind I read in Star :)

Gert, nice! Ya know what, I actually miss chili so much! Surprisingly, chili ... basically, the Tex-Mex cuisine was never my top choice when I was in the States. (Taco Bell is darn popular there ...) However, I loved enjoying a bowl of piping hot chili in the fall and winter. Nice with cornbread!!! A popular potluck item in Minnesota, too!

Aiya, where got cold in Malaysia ... LOL! At most, torrential tropical rain ... Nothing gets worse than living in the -20C Minnesota for 6 months a year. LOL!

Stay warm, yea?

In San Francisco Chili Fried with melted cheese is very popular. Some places serve also grill cornbread. Cornbread that already baked and brush with melted butter and grill in pan till brown on both side and serve.

Funny how my many years in States I have not actually ate chili more then twice. :P As what Pei-Lin was saying, this Tex-Mex cuisine is not a popular choice, especially in my household. :P But I love tortilla chips with chili and melted cheddar cheese over it!! Well...that would perhaps be another post?? ;))

Pei-lin, I am not too fond of tex-mex either but for cold weather like this it is nice to have chili.

Karen, grill cornbread sounds good with this.

Cooking Gallery, ha ha yea we asian just can't stay away from our rice.

Pigpigscorner, :)

Bee Bee, for us we eat Tex-mex only once a while. No, didn't put this on tortilla chips. We can't afford the extra calories ha ha..

LCOM, must be pretty cold at your side.
