Mini Donuts

I tried out this mini donut recipe from Ummi’s blog and we like it a lot. I always like the traditional yeasty donut coated with sugar compare to the cakey kinds that were coated with all kinds of toppings. I guess I am the very old fashion kind of person. What about you? What type of donut do you prefer?

Ingredients:

200 gram of bread flour
20 gram sugar
½ tsp salt
1 tsp dry yeast
140 ml milk
20 gm butter

Coating:

Some sugar

1. Put all the dry ingredients like flour, sugar, salt and yeast in the mixing bowl. Mix until combined.
2. Turn on the mixer attached with dough hook. Turn on the mixer and slowly drizzle in the milk. Knead until dough comes together and add in the butter. Continue kneading until the dough is smooth (if the dough is too soft add a bit more flour)
3. Cover and let the dough rest until double in size. Roll out the dough to about ¼” thick and cut into desire shapes. Cover the cut donuts and let it rest again until double in size.
4. Heat up the oil for deep frying. Fry the donuts over medium heat until golden brown on both sides. Remove and drain oil on paper towel.
5. Let it cool down and coat it with sugar.

  10. The donuts must be really soft. I tried making donuts once, but with water. It turns out pretty tough! Or maybe I didn't proof them long enough. I will try your recipe!

  15. I am old fashioned,Gert.I like my doughnuts to be light and airy and with just castor sugar. When I was in primary school,I still remember the school canteen ada jual this type of douhnuts..very nice and it was only 10sen last time.Nowadays, tak jumpa that type of doughnuts already. You know,it never occur to me to make my doughnuts any other shape than round with middle berlubang!

these were my favorite when i was a kid! The confectionery near my place would have a few of these skewered together in a satay stick and mum would buy them for us as a snack! Thanks for bringing back my childhood memories!

  27. Alice, hope your kids like it.

Shereen, me too. I already bookmarked yours to try out one day too. Let me recover from my cold first. Yea our school canteen used to sell this too but only on Saturday when we had our extra classes. I will always buy some home for my sisters.

    Joyce, thank you.

Bee Bee, I am not a fan of frying either because of the splatter. But frying donut is easy. No splatter at all.

Travellingfoodies, putting in on skewered sounds great. I should do that the next time I am doing this again.

    Jess, thanks.

LG, I pun tak suka the cakey kind that is why I am not a fan of dunkin donuts :)

  28. Mary, thanks.

Jeannie, ha ha.. I too like this old fashion type.

Wendy, yes the dough is too sticky.

  29. No hole in the centre? I buy from the kampong kuih stall here...10 sen each, small donuts...very nice - better than those branded ones with all the ghastly toppings.

  30. How do you keep your donut shape after proofing and before frying. Every time when I prove my dough after shaping and take it to fry the shape just gets distorted hence my donut always looks so ugly.

thanks for the advice in advance :)

  31. oh, I prefer the traditional one too!
Whenever buy some modern colorful donut, will definitely scrape the topping away.
    To sweet to my taste.
