Memorial Day 2011

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. Service Members who died while in the military service.[1] First enacted by the an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR)[2] to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War – it was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars.

Memorial Day often marks the start of the summer vacation season, and Labor Day its end of summer. Begun as a ritual of remembrance and reconciliation after the Civil War, by the early 20th century, Memorial Day was an occasion for more general expressions of memory, as ordinary people visited the graves of their deceased relatives, whether they had served in the military or not. It also became a long weekend increasingly devoted to shopping, family get-togethers, fireworks, trips to the beach, and national media events such as the Indianapolis 500 auto race, held since 1911 on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.

We had our 1st BBQ for the season on Sunday with a few friends over. We had the usual food like grilled corn, ribs, hotdogs, chicken wings and etc…. Here are some pictures we took to shared it with you.

A few kinds of hotdogs

Chicken Wings

Ribs

Grilled Corns

Herb butter for the corn

Watermelon

Have a fun, safe, and memorable Memorial Day. God Bless America!!

I especially love your watermelon design. So unique like a X'mas tree. Wish I have a BBQ pit too to BBQ.I always love the BBQ smell from my neighbour. But hubby said no point buying it as we'll be here in the US for another 1 1/2 yrs before going back to Singapore.

Gert,
Tak boleh tahan tengok the ribs...basah my front baju..muahahaha.You really got too much time on your hands..to cut the watermelon into that design. If me, you'll get it in cubes or slices only:)I hope you had a pleasant time sharing with your friends.Take care and have fun.

Thanks for this post, Gert, I have always wondered what does memorial day commemorates- now I know. So this marks the beginning of summer ... That's why so many people are doing BBQ during this long weekend.

Happy Memorial Day Gert! Looks like you and your friends had a feast of BBQ that day huh? I remembered I usually spend my memorial weekend driving up to fruit Orchards to pick cherries & peaches.  no matter how it is spent, it's best with good food & friends right?

Ali, yes they taste so much better with the smokey flavor.

Jeannie, thank you.

Sonia, yes we did :)

Swee San, thanks.

Anon, thank you. You can always bring the grill back to Singapore and use it there.

Shereen, ha ha.. not too much lah. Easier for people to eat when I cut it this way as they can hold it with their fingers. Don't have to use toothpick or fork :)

Shirley, you are welcome. Yes, people will continue to BBQ from now till labor day then the grill will get some rest before the next grilling season again :)

Bee bee, thank you. Summer time is all about grilling. I just check on the cherry picking here and it will start only middle middle of June. I thought of doing it this year.

Ann, yes we did and thank you :)
