Stuffed Tofu/Tahu Sumbat

This is one of Malaysian favorite snacks. Famously known as Tahu Sumbat or fried tofu stuffed with vegetables. It is usually sold by the road side stalls especially during the Ramadan month or fasting month. There are usually served with sweet and spicy chili sauce but some like it with peanut sauce.

Ingredients:

3 pieces firm tofu – cut in half diagonally into 2 triangles
Half cucumber – julienned
A small carrot – julienned
A handful of bean sprout – removes the tails and blanched briefly

Sauce:

4 fresh chilies
2 cloves garlic
½ tsp salt
2 tbsp sugar – more if you like it sweeter
¾ cup water
3 tbsp vinegar

1. Cut the tofu and pat it really dry on paper towel. Heat up the oil and fry them until golden brown. Drain the oil on paper towel and set it aside to cool down.
2. Mix the bean sprouts, cucumber, and carrot together. Cut a slit on the tofu, open it up with your fingers and stuff some of the vegetables into it.
3. Serve it with the chili sauce.

For the Chili sauce:

Blend the chili and garlic with a bit of water. Heat up a small pot; add the blended chili, water, vinegar, salt and sugar. Bring it up to boil and let it simmer and reduce to half and sauce thickens. Serve with the stuff tofu.

I am entering this post in the Muhibbah Malaysian Monday roundup, created and hosted by Sharon of Test with a Skewer and Suresh of 3 Hungry Tummies.

I had these since young. When I was young, I eat it with tomato sauce instead of chilli sauce. Now, once in a while, i still eat it with tomato sauce.

I'm not a big fan of this but hubby is! He can eat lots of them with loads of chili sauce while I prefer peanut sauce. But only mamak stalls provides peanut sauce. What about Carlos! He likes them too? Hope you're enjoying the day.
Blessings, Kristy
